The film is set in France during the Seven Years' War. As the film begins, Fanfan (Gérard Philipe) is a charming, attractive young man who is trying to escape a shotgun marriage. At this vulnerable point in his life, he is approached by the daughter of a recruiting officer, Adeline, (played by Gina Lollobrigida) who tells him that if he joins the army, he will find fame, fortune, and will marry the king's daughter. Accordingly he joins the army, only to discover that she made the whole thing up in order for her father to get a recruiting bonus. Nevertheless, encouraged by a series of improbable circumstances, he accepts her prediction as his destiny. A series of events ensues which shows off to great advantage his athleticism and leadership ability. As the film progresses, we become aware of a developing attraction between himself and Adeline which however conflicts with his perceived "destiny" of marrying a king's daughter

Für die Stummfilm-Diva Stella Dora findet ihr Liebhaber und Regisseur jedoch einen Ausweg: Er überredet Stellas Zofe Madeleine, die eine herrliche Stimme hat, diese ihrer Herrin im Studio per Playback zu leihen. Madeleine geht dabei leer aus. Als sie später auf eigene Faust den Sprung ins Schow-Buisness versucht, wird ihr Auftritt ohne die Aura des Filmstars zu einem Fiasko. Edith Piaf, am 19. Dezember 1915 als Edith Giovanna Gassion in Paris geboren, war schon zu Lebzeiten eine Lebende. Über 30 Jahre nach ihrem Tod am 11. Oktober 1963 vermag ihre Stimme immer noch zu rühren und zu verzaubern wie damals. In CHANSON DER LIEBE singt sie mit "Le chant du pirate", "Adieu mon coeur", "Mirage", "C"est merveilleux" und "C"etait une histore d"amour" einiger ihrer schönsten Lieder. Die kleine filmische Kostbarkeit war jahrzehntelang in französischen Archiven verstaubt und kam erst Anfang der neunziger Jahre in deutsche Kinos. Das effektvolle Melodram ist zugleich eine hintergründige Beschreibung des Mediums Film im Wechselspiel von Schein und Sein, Mythos und Realität.
