The well ( Visual )
2 editions published between 1951 and 2006 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A five year old black girl falls down a well. Her parents are unable to trace what has happened and the reports that she was seen earlier with a white man (who turns out to be a nephew of a wealthy local contractor) throw the small town into a furore. The theme of a town divided along racial lines had rarely been tackled in the American cinema up to this time. The script was based on an actual incident. The film works effectively as melodrama with well staged scenes of race riots and tense rescue work. As social commentary it now seems less incisive. The first Hollywood produced film dealing with racial division in small town America to be directed by a black was Gordon Parks' autobiographical The Learning Tree (1969)
