The social construction of nature : a sociology of ecological enlightenment by Klaus Eder( Book )

5 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Social Construction of Nature is a critical examination of the relationship between nature and culture. Eder demonstrates that our ideas of nature are culturally determined and explains how the interaction between modern industrial societies and nature is increasingly violent and destructive." "Through a careful analysis of symbolism, ritual and taboo, Eder questions the view of nature as an object. Showing how nature is socially constructed, the work presents a critique of Marx and Durkheim while offering a radical reinterpretation of the relation between society, culture and nature." "The Social Construction of Nature concludes with an examination of the symbolic basis of the modern politics of nature. Using a culturalist interpretation, Eder explains how environmentalism, and the social construction of nature, is a key index of social order and structure." "This is a unique and agenda-setting interpretation of nature and ecology that will become the essential reference in any debate on environmental politics and sociology."--Jacket

Reflexive modernization : politics, tradition and aesthetics in the modern social order by Ulrich Beck( Book )

3 editions published between 1994 and 2004 in English and held by 23 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Three prominent social thinkers discuss how modern society is undercutting its formations of class, stratum, occupations, sex roles, the nuclear family, and more. Reflexive modernization, or the way one kind of modernization undercuts and changes another, has wide ranging implications for contemporary social and cultural theory, as this provocative book demonstrates
The reinvention of politics : rethinking modernity in the global social order by Ulrich Beck( Book )

9 editions published between 1977 and 2015 in English and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Those who advocate ideas about "postmodernity" and "post-industrialism" offer radical critiques of existing social and political institutions. But they provide very little in place of those institutions. It is all very well to criticize the limitations of social democracy, the welfare state, trade unionism, and social classes as agents of change, but once these have been thrown into crisis what other institutions do we have to depend on? The Reinvention of Politics, suggests we should think again about forging a new model of politics for our times. An active, devolved civil society, Beck argues, can sustain the claim that modernity is inherently democratic. For many issues now - for example, those involving technology, environment protest, the family, or gender relations - belong to the domain of what the author calls "subpolitics". The postmodern critique of modernity, in Beck's view, is based on mistaken generalizations about a transitional phase in the evolution of modern society. What is needed, he argues, is the reinvention of politics, corresponding to the new demands of a society which remains modern, but which has progressed beyond the earlier form of industrial society. This book will be essential reading for second-year undergraduates and above in the fields of social and political theory, sociology and political science

An objective force leader development plan by Mark L Ritter( Book )

4 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Objective Force (OF) is the primary focus of the Army's current transformation journey. The final organization and structure of the OF is not yet known; however, the principles guiding its development are: agility, versatility, survivability, and sustainability. The OF is required to ensure the Army's success in future operations in a complex, volatile and uncertain environment. This Strategy Research Project examines the Army's leader development plan to train effective OF officers. It evaluates the efficacy of the enduring leader competencies as identified by the Army Training and Leader Development Panel and used in evolving leader development doctrine. The current Army plans for transforming the institutional domain of officer leader development are analyzed and evaluated with respect to the desired OF leader competencies. This paper then makes recommendations to improve the Army's leader development transformation as well as recommendations for further study

Molecular Markers and Prostate Cancer Radiation Response( Book )

5 editions published between 2003 and 2005 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two cohorts of relatively early stage prostate cancer patients, one treated with radiation therapy and the other with surgery have been identified and have been shown to have similar 5-year disease free survivals after treatment. Abnormal p53 protein levels, indicating mutation, are present in a substantial percentage of relatively early stage prostate cancer patients. High levels of p53 protein strongly correlates, both under univariate and multivariate analysis, with higher rates of subsequent PSA failure in patients treated with radiation therapy but not in patients treated with radical prostatectomy indicating a predictive power that has significant specificity of radiation. This study indicates that p53 is a very strong predictor of outcome after radiotherapy but not after surgery in early stage prostate cancer. If pretreatment markers such as p53 that are specific for radiation response can be identified and confirmed in additional clinical trials, their availability could ultimately supplement the medical decision-making process and allow better prospective tailoring of treatment to the biological characteristics of each patient's tumor. For example, a patient predicted to be at high risk for failure specifically after conventional radiotherapy might be better served by surgery or by aggressive dose escalation or perhaps by therapies that targets the identified molecular defect
