I am curious (yellow) ( Visual )
10 editions published between 1967 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Before making this film, Vilgot Sjöman was a novelist and scriptwriter and collaborated with director Ingmar Bergman on "Winter's Light". Sjöman directed several films in Sweden before achieving international success with "I Am Curious Yellow". This film and its sequel "I Am Curious Blue", were both extremely successful outside of Sweden, benefiting from extensive publicity generated by the court cases and censorship that dogged the film both in the U.S. and the U.K. "I Am Curious Yellow", was made for $160,000, and sufficiently caught the attention of both the censors and the public to generate millions at the box office. When it arrived in the United States, the film was seized by U.S. Customs on the basis that it was obscene. The film was only released after an extensive legal battle by Grove Press (the U.S. distributor) which resulted in the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturning the ruling of a lower court. "The lovemaking throughout is neither titillating, mechanical, bourgeois nor deeply significant; but casual and free, filled with warmth, strife and experimentation....But the sex scenes (at least on first viewing) overshadow the film's main theme, the attack on the values (or the lack of values) of the Swedish welfare state and contemporary society in general."
