The plot is famously complex, full of intrigues and dramatic incidents, including the discovery of a long-lost daughter. The action hinges on the conflict between Boccanegra and his political adversary, the aristocrat Jacopo Fiesco. Boccanegra's long-lost daughter, Amelia, is also Fiesco's granddaughter. She remains ignorant of her origins for most of the opera, and only learns the entire truth in the final act
