The first sixteen plates, also issued under the title Suite des seize estampes représentant les conquêtes de l'empereur de la Chine, are derived in smaller format from prints produced under the direction of Charles-Nicolas Cochin after the designs of Giuseppe Castiglione and other missionary-artists at the imperial court in Beijing. The suite of sixteen is joined by eight additional prints on ceremonies performed by Emperor Qianlong, two of which specify that they are derived from works in the collection of Bertin (pl. XVII, XIX)
