Prima di cominciare le lezioni del nuovo anno, durante i campionati mondiali di Quidditch, il marchio nero di Voldemort - segno di un prossimo ritorno del Signore Oscuro - viene evocato nel cielo da un suo fedele seguace gettando paura ed inquietudine su tutti i maghi del mondo. L'anno scolastico, scandito come al solito dallo scorrere delle stagioni e dal passaggio tra una lezione di pozioni ad un'altra di erbologia, è caratterizzato dall'attesissimo "Torneo Tre Maghi". Gli allievi delle tre maggiori scuole di magia, l'inglese Hogwarts, la francese Beauxbaton e la bulgara Durmstrang, si sfidano su tre prove per vincere la coppa. I partecipanti, a cui è richiesta un'età non inferiore ai diciassette anni, dopo aver depositato il proprio nome nel calice di fuoco, vengono scelti dal calice stesso. Con sgomento di tutti, però, al momento della scelta escono dal calice non tre ma quattro nomi: oltre ad un allievo per ogni scuola viene indicato dal calice anche il nome di Harry Potter. Pur non avendo depositato il proprio nome nel calice, Harry si trova così a dover affrontare un torneo pieno di insidie. La prima prova consiste nell'affrontare un drago sottraendogli l'indizio per la prova successiva, ed Harry la supera grazie alle sua abilità nel volo con la scopa ed all'aiuto di Ron, Ermione e dello strambo Alastor "Malocchio" Moody, il nuovo insegnante di "difesa contro le arti oscure". La seconda prova vede addirittura Harry vincere salvando dagli abissi del lago nero non solo il suo ostaggio ma anche quello di un'altra concorrente. Nel corso della terza prova - la ricerca della coppa del torneo all'interno di un labirinto stregato - accade qualcosa di inatteso e sconvolgente: Harry arriva alla coppa insieme al compagno Cedric Diggory, ma l'oggetto si rivela essere una "passaporta", ovvero un passaggio che catapulta i due in un cimitero abbandonato dove il fido Codaliscia sta cerc ando di far tornare in forze Voldemort. L'ingrediente mancante per la riuscita dell'incantesimo è proprio una goccia del sangue di Harry Potter, il quale, intrappolato, non può impedirne il prelievo. Ne segue una lotta in cui Cedric perde la vita ed Harry viene salvato dall'evocazione magica dei propri genitori, riuscendo a tornare ad Hogwarts. Ora però il ritorno di Voldemort incombe come un'ombra maligna sul mondo dei maghi, e la morte di un alunno dimostra che nemmeno Hogwarts è più un posto sicuro.
