The two rapscallions succeed in wreaking havoc on the Baron's family, putting loved ones at odds with one another and leading all but the truest hearts to disaster. Based on a medieval legend, the film was originally intended to be a veiled commentary on Hitler's Europe, but the interest of Nazi censors forced the director to set the story safely in the distant past.
