Abstract:
This [book] is intended as an introduction to the study of social inequality. The assumptions upon which it is based are ... [that] (1) inequality is multidimensional; (2) explanations of the various forms of inequality are necessary for any resolution of inequality's undesirable consequences; (3) couching a discussion of inequality in its broader historical, cultural, and international context provides a deeper understanding of nature and role of inequality in society; and (4) an evenhanded approach covering the full range of perspectives and information on inequality is most appropriate, especially for students being exposed to this material for the first time. [The author's] goal is to convey ... a sense of the pervasiveness and extensiveness of social inequality in the United States within a comparative context, to show how inequality can be explained, how it affects all of us, and what is being done about it. -Pref.
