Abstract:

The lives of squire's daughter Matilda Pedley and her maid, Rachel, resume against the backdrop of a country agitating for Reform. Rachel is now happily settled with Jed Fairfax and Matilda has finally rebuilt the debt-ridden estate her father left. As the next generation comes to the fore, Harry's daughters, Judith and Olivia meet Adam and Clare Pedley out riding. Judith, unconventional and headstrong, is immediately drawn to Clare; while Olivia, not knowing she and Adam share the same father, finds herself strangely attracted to him.
