Satchel Paige, a Mobile native, had played in the Negro Leagues but entered Major League Baseball in 1948 with the Cleveland Indians. Born Leroy Robert Page in 1906 (some sources say 1905) in an area of Mobile, Alabama, called Down the Bay, Paige was the son of John Page, a gardener, and Lula Coleman Page, a domestic. The family changed their name to Paige sometime in the 1920s or '30s.
