'Resources Related to Cults, Coercion, Abuse and Recovery' by Wieber

Description: The materials on this list were accumulated as an attempt to answer the question, "What the f**k happened?" Almost every person, upon exiting a cult asks that question in just that way with that particular expletive. The degree of pain, bewilderment, frustration, sense of loss, wasted years, betrayal and so on could not be expressed without it. It is hoped that these materials will provide an understanding, to those who have never been in a cult, of cults and the mechanism involved in the capture, indoctrination, control, and abuse of individuals who become involved in cults and who, in effect, have their lives stolen from them by cults. Additionally it is hoped that those who have been in a cult will gain that understanding and achieve some degree of recovery from having been in a cult.

Notes:
Mitchum's performance here demonstrates to a great extent the personality characteristic of cult leaders.
2.
by Gary Numan; Tubeway Army (Musical group)
  Music CD : CD audio : Rock music
Language: English
Publisher: [London?] : Beggars Banquet, ©2008.

Notes:
Gary Numan's relationship with Scientology is mysterious. Some songs, especially CD bonus tracks have words and concepts that only a person beyond basic courses and likely on staff would know. The way the words are used indicates a critical view.
3.

Notes:
Yes, when you join a cult you do make a deal with the devil, or something quite analogous to it. The good things you get are just as flimsy, twisted and insubstantial as those depicted in this film.
5.

  DVD video : Animation : Juvenile audience : NTSC color broadcast system
Language: English
Publisher: Burbank, CA : Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, 2009.

Notes:
The sequence that starts with Pinnochio meeting the fox and cat, going to Pleasure Island and that ends with escaping is very much analogous to the way a person is found, captured, indoctrinated and abused by a cult.
6.
by Martin Scorsese; William Monahan; Brad Pitt; Brad Grey; Graham King; Leonardo DiCaprio; Matt Damon; Jack Nicholson; Mark Wahlberg; Martin Sheen; Ray Winstone; Vera Farmiga; Anthony Anderson; Alec Baldwin; Wenqiang Zhuang; Howard Shore; Zhaohui Mai; Warner Bros.   DVD video
Language: English
Publisher: Burbank, CA : Warner Home Video, [2007]

Notes:
Nicholson's performance in this film perfectly captures the essence of a psychopathic personality. To a lesser extent his manipulation of Matt Damon's character is very much the way cult members are manipulated by cult leaders.
7.
by Scott Rudin; Andrew Niccol; Edward S Feldman; Adam Schroeder; Peter Weir; Jim Carrey; Laura Linney; Noah Emmerich; Natascha McElhone; Holland Taylor; Ed Harris; Paramount Pictures Corporation.; Paramount Home Entertainment (Firm);
  Bluray Video : Blu-ray disc   Visual material
Language: English
Publisher: Hollywood, Calif. : Paramount Home Entertainment, [2008]

Notes:
This is cited frequently as being what it is like in a cult. Although Truman is treated better than cult members the deceptions and control involved are very close to those that are done to cult members.
8.
by Mark Johnson; Philip Steuer; Ann Peacock; Andrew Adamson; Christopher Markus; Stephen McFeely; Georgie Henley; Skandar Keynes; William Moseley; Anna Popplewell; Tilda Swinton; James McAvoy; Jim Broadbent; Kiran Shah; James Cosmo; Judy McIntosh; Elizabeth Hawthorne; Patrick Kake; Harry Gregson-Williams; C S Lewis; Walt Disney Pictures.; Walden Media.; Walt Disney Home Entertainment (Firm); Buena Vista Home Entertainment (Firm);
  Bluray Video : Blu-ray disc   Visual material
Language: English
Publisher: Burbank, CA : Walt Disney Home Entertainment : Distributed by Buena Vista Home Entertainment, [2008]

Notes:
The relationship here between Edmund and the White Witch closely parallels the way a person is contacted by a cult, manipulated into becoming a cult member, used by the cult and then treated by the cult when they leave.
9.
by Flo Conway; Jim Siegelman
  Book
Language: English
Publisher: New York : Stillpoint Press, 2005.

10.
by Mervyn LeRoy; John Lee Mahin; Eileen Heckart; Nancy Kelly; Patty McCormack; Maxwell Anderson; William March; Warner Bros. Pictures (1923-1967); Warner Home Video (Firm);

Notes:
This film very well demonstrates the psychopathic personality. If you get the DVD be sure to watch it with the commentary.
