Abstract:

From the Introduction: This book is designed to be helpful in the processes of definition and division. Only you can say how much time you should devote to each phase, as this varies according to the conditions of specific term papers and to your characteristics as a writer. (Very generally, though, finding a topic and doing research take as long as organizing, developing, and writing.) We have provided one chapter for each phase, and these chapters appear in their correct order, beginning with "The Search for a Topic" and ending with "Term Paper Tips." Each chapter contains a general discussion of the phase, and instructions on the best way of taking these steps. If you combine our detailed chapters with your own effort, your paper will be manageable, orderly, easier to write, and, above all, worthy of your talents. With a little application and a rational approach, you will avoid term paper disaster. Because selecting a topic is the first phase, it affects every succeeding one, yet it can be terribly difficult to do properly. It requires much thought and precision. Therefore we have included an elaborate chapter on this phase as well as a large and varied compendium of topics, each of which is treated in detail. When you have finished the chapter of Part I, refer to this compendium. Even if you have a topic clearly in mind, our list can give you valuable ideas for your own topic and show how to give it workable form.
