Abstract:

Generally considered the most famous passenger train ever, the New York-to-Chicago 20th Century Limited was fittingly pulled by some of the century's greatest locomotive designs, including the streamlined Commodore Vanderbilt of 1934, Henry Dreyfuss' famous shrouded Hudson unveiled in 1938, and diesels like Electro-Motive E-units after World War II. This authoritative history of the 20th Century Limited from 1920 to its 1967 demise examines the train; its steam, electric, and diesel motive power; and its swank passenger card, services, and amenities. Dozens of black-and-white archival images and period color photographs depict the train along its route, as well as dinnerware and menus, advertisements, route maps, and interior views of cars, in the process providing a dramatic visual account of train travel's development throughout the century. --from cover.
