Abstract:

1. Their finest hour: Selfless courage and against-the-odds survival. This is a story that has it all. This week marks a year since the Indonesian fishing boat SIEV 36 exploded off Ashmore Reef, killing five Afghani asylum seekers. The sailors involved have never spoken publicly about what happened, even when they were accused of gross misconduct. That all changes on Sunday night. Peter Overton just had the privilege of meeting the crews of the HMAS Childers and Albany. What they did that day on the reef was life changing and heroic.

2. Living the dream: It's a fairytale for the You Tube generation, the dowdy Scottish spinster with the nightingale voice who found fame and fortune through reality television. Susan Boyle really did become an overnight sensation when she auditioned for that TV talent quest. And while she still lives in the same pokey house, in the same dreary town, her life has changed in almost every other way. The Ugly Duckling hasn't turned into a beautiful swan just yet. But she has picked up a stylist and a quite delightful sense of humour. And having heard her life story, we can tell you, Susan Boyle deserves her happily ever after.

3. The lost children: Most children have wonderful imaginations. They invent playmates and create their own unique worlds. Quite simply, they march to a different drum. But at what point does an active fantasy life drift into madness? When is an imaginary friend a sign of something more sinister? Tragically, a mental illness like schizophrenia doesn't just happen to grown ups. As Jay Schadler reports, it affects little kids too.
