摘要:

Information on growth and development of Sorex cinereus from birth to 20 days was obtained from 60 nestlings from nine litters. Periodic removal of young shrews for measurement did not cause females to relocate their nests. Eyes and ears opened at 17-18 and 14-17 days, respectively. Incisors erupted between days 13 and 14; weaning occurred after day 20. Growth data were fitted to the Richards equation. Body weight averaged 0.28 g on the day of birth, 2.1 g on day 8, and 3.5 g on day 20. Hind foot and tail reached adult length by 17-20 days, whereas mean body weight equaled that of free-ranging subadults (2.8 g) at 10-11 days and began to plateau at about 3.5 g by day 15. At 20 days, nestlings contained 3.8 times as much subcutaneous fat as was found in subadult specimens. This excess weight gain in the nest may have survival value for the young while they learn to hunt.
