Abstract:

Collection comprises a portfolio (circa 1962) containing ABC television network promotional cards, each linked to assorted original 19th- and 20th-century printed ephemera. The portfolio was created to encourage advertisers to purchase television commercial time for the 1963-1964 television season. The promotional cards explain the network's plans programming that includes music, drama, public affairs, and advertising; and explain how the ephemeral items included represent each of these areas. Each card is signed by Thomas W. Moore. Ephemera includes a muscial piece, "If I Speak to Thee in Friendship's Name," written by T. Moore, arranged by H.R. Bishop (1838?); an issue of THE DUBLIN UNIVERSITY MAGAZINE (1837 January);" an issue of the NEW YORK COMMERCIAL ADVERTISER newspaper (5 July 1849); two 19th-century advertising trade cards (undated), for Brown's Iron Bitters and Brewster's Safety Rein Holder, accompanied by a modern imitation advertising trade card that promotes ABC; a printed map of Gibraltar (Plate 22 from an unidentified book, circa 1808); and a playbill for "Come of Age," featuring Judith Anderson at Maxine Elliott's Theatre in New York City (5 February 1934). The only item lacking a promotional card is the newspaper issue.
