The war is to save and perpetuate democracy, not destroy it; therefore the government is not going to enter the motion picture business. Master of Ceremonies Bob Hope makes jokes. Mrs. William Wyler, on behalf of her husband, accepts the award for Best Direction (Mrs. Miniver) from Lt. Col. Frank Capra. Louis B. Mayer accepts the award for outstanding production (for Mrs. Miniver) from William Goetz. Lt. Van Heflin accepts the Best Supporting Actor award (for Johnny Eager) from Gary Cooper.
