Abstract:

This account book, for the period 1707 to 1723, is one of a series of at least five such volumes for a general store. In it, Thing recorded debits and credits for individuals who patronized his Exeter store. Godds exchanged included food, almanacs, psalmbooks, hops, padlocks, fabrics, buttons, stockings, shoes, gloves, leather britches, hats, silk and cotton handkerchiefs, ivory combs, knitting needles, buckles, papers, lumber, shingles, nails, lead, knives and forks, raisins, and imported porcelain. Payment for goods and services, rendered by Thing himself and Daniel Young ( - ), who was apparently apprenticed to Thing, was often made in kind by barrels of pork or sturgeon, bushels of peas, loads of salt hay, animal skins, or by labor, frequently by sawing at the King Falls mill but sometimes planking, caulking, and repairing the ship _Georg_, rafting timber up-river, or mowing. The first pages serve as an index for the volume.

There are also two unrelated loose items: a November 1846 newsclipping advertisement for merchandise and for notices of guardians and administrators; and a manuscript resolution, dated 12 December 1853, by the Citizens of Exeter to "make suitable arrangements in reference to a proposed address by the Hon. Charles L. Davis on the Life & Character of the late Gov. [John Taylor] Gilman."
