At the age of 15, Ward traveled to the Willamette Valley with 25 others in a party of eight wagons, from Arkansas via Bent's Fort and the Upper Platte. Mattes notes that "Arkansas folks bound for Oregon were rare," and Streeter says that "this account of an overland journey was written long after the event, but I have put it in my collection mainly because of the unusual route and partly because it is well written and has some interesting stories."
