Abstract:

(Critical) This program, part of a series from the American Journal of Nursing Company, reviews care of the neurologically disabled patient during the rehabilitative stage. Skin problems and protection, extremity positioning, education for self-care, physical therapy, and exercises are discussed. Self-esteem, re-integration difficulties, and the need for humanity and communication in a rehabilitation program are emphasized and related to the nurse's role. The disabilities and nursing interventions of two patients, one with spinal cord injury, and one a stroke victim, are paralleled. Although clear and concise, this module requires the presence of a knowledgable instructor, and it is suggested that the series be used as a unit. It is recommended for nurse practitioners in rehabilitation, neurology, neurosurgery, general medical/surgical, and for graduates or students in Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy.
