A comedy-drama adapted from Twain's famous novel set on the banks of the Mississippi River in the 1880s that chronicled the childhood exploits of a boy and his friends. Selznick made two unsuccessful attempts at this film before Taurog, who had directed Paramount's 'Huckleberry Finn' (1931) took over the direction from H.C. Potter. He discarded the black-and-white footage that had already been shot and began production in Technicolor. Exhaustive research was undertaken to ensure the authenticity of the setting and the characters, while photographer James Wong Howe insisted that the film maintain its true Southern and rural flavor by using only subdued earth tones.
