Judgment day (1831-1861) recounts the last pre-Civil War years. The nation expands west, taking slavery with it. Black abolitionists Frederick Douglass, Rev. Jermain Loguen, and Sojourner Truth agitate for justice. Southerners threaten to secede. An 1850 compromise enacts a "fugitive slave" law. In 1857, the Supreme Court hands down the Dred Scott decision. Slaveowners seek to reopen slave trade, while abolitionists battle slave catchers.
