Abstract:

Air scatterable land mines, capable of being emplaced in enemy rear areas, suggest and invite a different approach to old problems of air interdiction. Some aspects of the potential of mine warfare as a part of an attack system designed to disrupt and delay are examined, and a sampling of candidate employment concepts is presented. The emphasis is upon delaying or diluting the attacker's combat power as it approaches the defender's position, while conserving scarce tactical air resources in a high threat environment. Opportunities for Air Force exploitation of the new capabilities are suggested, and some inherent problems are highlighted.
