Abstract:

Albums containing cartes-de-visite photographs depicting friends and family of the Murray and Ferris families of Poughkeepsie, New York, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and probably compiled by Hannah Shotwell Murray, 1861-1875.

Family members and friends of these families were probably involved with the Quaker religious community based on the costume of individuals and the inclusion of photographs depicting prominent Quakers, including George Fox, the founder of the Religious Society of Friends; Peter Bedford, an English philanthropist; Joseph Crosfield, an English minister who traveled extensively in the United States in 1845 and 1865; Elizabeth Gurney Fry, an English prison reformer; Stephen Grellet, a French missionary; Richard Reynolds, an English philanthropist and industrialist; Edward C. Young, a physician and minister in North Lewisburg, Ohio; and Lindley Murray, a grammarian and theologian who may also have been a member of the Murray family.

Identified members of the Ferris family include Caroline Murray Ferris, David Sands Ferris, Elizabeth Colden Ferris, Gertrude Colden Ferris, Lindley Murray Ferris, Lindley Murray Ferris, Jr., Martha Sands Ferris, Mary Murray Ferris, and Robert Murray Ferris.

Identified members of the Murray family include David Colden Murray, Hannah Shotwell Murray, Jane Murray, Mary Sherwood Murray, Nancy K. Murray, Robert Lindley Murray, Robert T. Murray, Ruth Taber Murray, and Sarah Shotwell Murray.

The majority of the cartes-de-visite depict portraits of unidentified children, women, and men.

Vallett, and the Brady National Photographic Art Gallery. Photographers from other cities in the state of New York include Samuel J. Thompson of Albany; William F. Kidney of Peekskill; and J. H. Kent of Rochester.

Photographers from New Bedford, Massachusetts, include the Bierstadt Brothers studio, comprised of Albert Bierstadt, Edward Bierstadt, and Charles Bierstadt; Charles Taber & Co.; and George F. Parlow. The collection includes photographer D. W. Bowdoin of Salem, Massachusetts.
