Abstract:

Eisenhower is sent to England as head of U.S. forces in Europe. There his plans for an invasion on the Western Front are put on hold as because General Bernard Law Montgomery and his troops are fighting Rommel, "the Desert Fox" in North Africa. When the Suez Canal is secured at El Alamein and the Germans driven back into North Africa, American troops are sent to support the war effort along the coast of French North Africa. General Eisenhower makes a pact with Admiral Jean Darlan of the Nazi-supported Vichy government in France and becomes heavily involved in French politics. Meanwhile, American troops in North Africa are defeated at the Battle of Kasserine Pass. Several American division commanders are relieved of their duties; Omar Bradley and General Patton are sent to North Africa and, by 1943, win victories in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and the Middle East. General De Gaulle emerges as a strong military leader in France; the Russians are turning back the Germans, and the tide begins to turn in the Pacific with the Battle of the Coral Sea, and the Battle of Midway. Allied war planning focuses on the invasion of Sicily and Italy. Eisenhower is the Supreme Commander in these assaults and in Operation Overlord, the first invasion of German-occupied Europe.
