Abstract:
Large, small and cannibal morphs of the tiger salamander from west Texas were assayed for genetic variation at eight polymorphic loci. Large and small morph populations possessed the same alleles and similar gene frequencies; the average genetic similarity between populations of these two morphs was 0.9904 ± 0.0027. Cannibals and noncannibals from the same pond displayed significant differences in gene frequencies, but the differences were not consistent in different populations In spite of considerable morphological and life history differences among these three morphs little genetic divergence in proteins has occurred among them.
