Genre/Form: Almanacs
Material Type: Internet resource
Document Type: Book, Internet Resource
All Authors / Contributors: Isaac Bickerstaff; Benjamin West; Nehemiah Strong
OCLC Number: 55835664
Notes: Attributed by Evans to Benjamin West, evidently on the basis of West's association with the name Bickerstaff. However, except for the statement of the meridian on the title page, the almanac is identical in content and typography with An almanack, for the year of our Lord Christ, 1786 ... Calculated for the meridian of Hartford ... By Isaac Bickerstaff (Hartford: Nathaniel Patten). In these two publications the eclipse notes and the calendar page calculations are practically identical with those in Nehemiah Strong's An astronomical ephemeris, calendar, or almanack for ... 1786 ... (Hartford: Hudson & Goodwin). Cf. Bates, A.C. "Check list of Connecticut almanacs." Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, n.s. v. 24 (1914): 101-107, 138.
An astronomical diary: or An almanack, for 1785, by Isaac Bickerstaff (Springfield: Brooks & Russell) is attributable to Strong for similar reasons, and is presumably the almanac mentioned in the preface to the present one as the author's production for the previous year. The identity between the present almanac and the Patten edition, together with the slight variance between their calculations and those in the Hudson & Goodwin almanac issued under Strong's own name and calculated for Hartford, suggest that the calculations in the former were made for Stebbins & Russell and for the meridian of Springfield, and that Stebbins & Russell then printed Patten's issue for him.
Advertised in the Hampshire herald, Springfield, Nov. 22, 1785.
