If you know old religions and ancient myths, this book will put them all to use.  I loved how smart this book made me feel whenever I recognized another god or goddess.  The idea of ancient heroes and ledgends emigrating to America is a fantastic premise, and it was all tied together so well.  I loved this book.  It made me wonder, and it made me try to believe in everything (a difficult task, but I'm working on it).  Shadow is a deep character; not as stupid as he seems, observant, and skeptical.  In fact, he usually reacts in very realistic ways, which make him all the more believable.  I learned a lot about religions and America, though I doubt that this could be accepted as a credible source.  A thought-provoking, interesting read that I think anyone would appriciate.
