The Downtown Gallery hoped to educate the public to appreciate American Negro artists and to inaugurate a special Negro Art Fund for the purchase of paintings, sculpture and graphics by contemporary American Negro artists to be presented to American museums and other public institutions.
Among the 52 contributing artists were: Henry Ossawa Tanner, Charles H. Alston, Romare Bearden, Malvin Gray Johnson, Jacob Lawrence, Archibald J. Motley, Horace Pippin, Richmond Barthe and Selma Burke.
