Abstract:

"Llano del Rio Cooperative Colony was America's most successful socialist Utopia. The experimental community practiced such social reforms as an eight hour work day, the minimum wage, social security, and quality education and cultural activities, through cooperation ... a generation before Roosevelts' New Deal. During its 25 year history over 10,000 people called the colony "home." Most amazing is that the colony thrived, not in California, where it began in 1914, but in conservative Louisiana."
