Abstract:

"In laying the framework for this study, it is important to see just how well the government rewarded its soldiers and also how satisfied veterans were with the results. This book begins with the first pensions adopted by the Federal government, a description of the procedure for disbursing benefits, and an analysis of the overall regard for veterans. The Continental Congress initiated this innovative process which continued until the administration of Andrew Jackson. Each phase reflected much of the thinking about pensions, pensioners, and social perceptions of the Revolutionary War"--Introduction.
