I was quite surprised to learn how America stacks up compared with other countries. Despite great wealth America ranks 40th place for life expectancy and infant mortality and our students rank average or below average in international comparisons. I was shocked to learn that America provides financial aid to 80% of the world's countries---including Russia. The book also contain a great deal of information about the U.S. itself and I found the charts showing the rapid growth of Welfare and Food Stamps to 20% of the population very alarming. This book makes it easy to see so many important measures, primarily by use of bar charts and line graphs. The user-friendly format does not sacrifice accuracy however since the actual values are also provided and the attributed sources of the data are also listed on the same page as the chart. This book provides an excellent overview of the real America! I highly recommend it whether you are doing research or want a great coffee table book.
