Abstract:

" ... In the 1960's, in the midst of unprecedented national prosperity, poverty was 'rediscovered' by policymakers, the mass media and the American public ... this series presents the stories of Washington's political leaders and their conflicting agendas; of local politicians confronted with federal programs they could not control; and of poor people organizing for change across America"--Excerpts from 1995 Peabody awards entry form.

Uses historical clips of Presidents Johnson and Nixon, the Kennedys, Sargent Shriver, among others. Interviews with people who lived through the internal migrations (Afro-Americans from the South, and miners and their families from the Appalachian coal fields) of the 1950's and 1960's. Highlights the early development of Johnson's "War on Poverty" and "Great Society" initiatives, especially the "Economic Opportunity" program.
