Abstract:

Drawing upon more than a decade spent living and exploring in Latin America, the author discusses the many phases of pre-Columbian art--including painting, sculpture, architecture, pottery, jewelry and textiles--within their historical framework. He focuses first on the civilizations of Mexico and Peru, where pre-Columbian art reached its height. In North America, the West Indies, and Central America, other cultures were creating their own art which, although often overshadowed by the spectacular legacies of Mexico and Peru, is marked by extraordinary manual skill and variety.
