"Edition de luxe. This edition is limited to 800 copies of which this is no. [blank]"--Verso of title pages.
"Copyright 1887 by the American Polytechnic Co., Limited"--Verso of title pages.
Listed in The American catalogue 1895-1900, page 86: "Binion, S.A. Ancient Egypt; or Mizraïm. '96 2 v. $80. H.G. Allen." Cf. a notice in Publisher's weekly, 25 July 1896: "Henry G. Allen and Co. ... have just published Ancient Egypt or Mizraïm, a work begun seven years ago by Samuel Augustus Binion ... limited to 800 copies."
Reissue. Originally issued in parts, beginning in 1888, by the American Polytechnic Company of Buffalo, N.Y. The original limitation statement specified 2000 copies (see the Library of Congress catalog record, 07-1065 / OCLC 2538865, with extent "[unspecified] v. in [unspecified] ... 108 pl."). Contemporary notices in periodicals (for example, The Academy no. 849, 11 August 1888, page 93; The nation, no. 1223, 6 December 1888, page 456; The American bookseller 25:2-4, 15 January-15 February 1889) indicate that the the company was selling the work by subscription only, at a full price of $150, to consist, when completed, of 144 plates issued in 12 portfolios (the Nation's report was based on "some specimen pages and a number of plates" received from the publisher, presumably similar to the salesman's dummy, for which see OCLC 18354349). Since the existence of the "American Polytechnic Company" is known only in connection with this publication, it may be conjectured to have been formed specifically to produce Ancient Egypt; but by 1896, having produced only half of the projected 144 plates, it abandoned the effort to sell the work by subscription, and either consigned or sold the remaining copies to Henry G. Allen and Co. to be issued with the Allen imprint.
As of 1910 Funk & Wagnalls had bought the remaining copies, already bound, to be sold at $60, "1/2 the cost of making the work" according to their advertisement in The literary digest of 9 July 1910, which further states: "The actual cost to produce the work was $106,000 or $132.50 for each set (800 sets). The production was attended by three consecutive failures of the concerns which attempted to finance the work during the nine years of its making, each lacking capital to finish it." When this advertisement was repeated in The literary digest of 8 January 1916, the price had come down to $45, "less than 1/3 former price".
Most of the color lithographic plates produced by Cosack & Co., Buffalo, N.Y., of which most have also the imprint of American Polytechnic Company. Two of the steel engravings produced by Keeler Morrison & Co., New York.
Each plate accompanied by leaf with descriptive letterpress.
Paper watermarked "MIZRAIM".
Issued in publisher's half maroon morocco and cloth boards; on front covers, "Mizraïm".
Description: 2 volumes (36, 36 leaves of plates) : 108 illustrations, plans (lithographs, most color; steel engravings) ; 65 cm.
Other Titles: Mizraïm
Responsibility: by Samuel Augustus Binion ; profusely illustrated with fine engravings and colored plates by the best artists, from the works of L'Expedition de l'Egypte, Lepsius, Prisse d'Avennes, &c. &c.
