Personal and business letters, literary and scientific manuscripts, official and legal documents, and clippings comprising a history of Edward Coffin Anderson (1821-1890); his sons, Melville Best Anderson (1851-1933) and Edward Playfair Anderson (1856-1951); and grandsons, Malcolm Playfair Anderson (1878-1949) and Robert Van Vleck Anderson (1884-1949); together with general material on the Anderson, Best, Playfair, Gurnee, and Van Vleck families. Of particular interest is the extensive correspondence relating to the literary career of Melville Best Anderson, including his interchange of letters with Francis Fisher Browne (1843-1913), editor of The Dial.
