Abstract:

Correspondence and a few papers, 1791-1843, of Andrew Bell of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and other members of the Bell and Paterson families, friends, and business acquaintances.

Correspondence includes 25 letters received from David Oakey, New York, 1806-1843, concerning Bell's business affairs; letters to Bell's wife, Susannah, from various relations and friends; 36 letters from their niece, Jane E. Paterson, of Morristown, New Jersey; 5 letters from Susannah Bell to her husband, including an 1804 letter discussing the death of Alexander Hamilton; and occassional letters from Susannah's niece, Sarah Nelson, Norfolk, Virginia; Heathcote Johnston, London; Andrew Bell's friend "Archy," of Newark; Samuel W. Whelpley; James Watson, Jr.; William Taylor; Andrew Bell Paterson; William Bell Paterson; and others. Letters concern personal and family matters, business affairs, finances, shipments of goods, land sales, etc. Also included are a small number of miscellaneous accounts, deeds, poems, etc., along with letters addressed by and to individuals outside of the Bell family.
