Tarek Heggy is widely considered one of the most thorough and objectives analysts of the Arab sociopolitical scene for the past three decades. As the former CEO and chairman of Royal Dutch Shell of the Middle East, he has a unique perspective on the workings of the Arab world. He takes an insightful look at the role religion plays in this region as well as its perception of the West. His project is clearly presented and simply put---he advocates for those values which e suggests will bring the Arab Middle East into step with progress and modernity--tolerance, religious freedom, women's rights, minority rights. acceptance of the "other" and democracy are among them. He writes both as an insider (he continues to live in Cairo) as well as one who shares a Western perspective from his vast experience in the upper echelons of one of the largest multinational corporations in the world.
