Abstract:

Reveals the way in which the buildings and monuments created by different civilizations throughout history provide insight into the culture, customs, values, and lifestyle of various peoples. The story of building, writes the author of this penetrating study, starts the way stories of so many of mankind's enterprises start - "speculatively, and in the almost immeasurably distant past." But it would be an exasperating experience to trace the evolution of mud huts into pyramids, Greek temples, and Gothic cathedrals. Instead he invites the reader to separate buildings for shelter from buildings as artistic statements. In an instant, we see architecture as a badge of civilization, "the requisite sign, the certain credential without which a society cannot be called civilized."
