Book indexes vary in their breadth of selection of index entries, depth of intellectual analysis of book content, means of vocabulary control, and facilitative intellectual and physical arrangements. The goal of the index quality study was to produce benchmark data on current book index characteristics and the policies and practices of those who have control over book indexes, namely, publishers and authors.
