Arthur's Home Magazine began in October 1852 as a monthly reprint of the weekly T.S. Arthur's Home Gazette. It seemed to flourish better than its sister publication and at the end of 1854 the Gazette was abandonded and efforts were concentrated on Home Magazine. The periodical was chiefly a women's and children's magazine with sections devoted to fashions, music and concert notes, a "Boys' and Girls' Treasury," an editor's department, book reviews, and so forth. It contained highly moral stories and features, written chiefly by Virginia Townsend. Arthur's Home Magazine never attained a large circulation, but it was cheap to produce except for illustration. Woodcuts adorned its pages and for a few years before the war it offered handcolored fashion plates. During the eighties, it offered free dress patterns as a circulation inducement, as did its major competitors.(Cont'd.) Arthur died in 1885 and his son continued the magazine until 1891 when it was sold to E. Stanley Hunt. Subscription rates were lowered to meet the competition, but did not succeed in stopping a steady decline. Roderic Penfield bought it in 1894 and although he improved it, he could not put it back on its feet. After a suspension in 1896-67, it ended in 1898. Arthur's Home Magazine succeeded during its existence of nearly half a century in making many devoted friends who liked precisely what it gave them - fashions, patterns, miscellany, and mildly sentimental verse and fiction at a low price. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
