A review of Asimov's Biographical Encyclopedia of Science and Technology (1982- 2nd revised edition1510 scientists) by Isaac Asimov
CITATION: Asimov, I. (1982) Asimov's Biographical Encyclopedia of Science and Technology: the lives and achievements of 1510 great scientists from ancient times to the present. Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc (2nd revised edition).
Reviewer: Dr William P. Palmer.
This is a reference work listing brief biographies of scientists, so this reviewer certainly has not read each biography but I have used Asimov's Biographical Encyclopedia regularly over many years. An earlier paperback edition has 1195 entries, so later editions where available will contain more biographies of scientists. I very much appreciate the effort that that Isaac Asimov put into this compilation. Each of the many dictionaries of scientists has its advantages and disadvantages and it is often necessary to search several dictionaries to find specific information. Other similar works are: Larousse Dictionary of Scientists: The Hutchinson Dictionary of Scientists (Helicon Science): Chamber's Concise Dictionary of Scientists: Random House Webster's Dictionary of Scientists: and Reader's Guide to the History of Science (Reader's Guide Series). There are also multivolume dictionaries of scientists such the prestigious Dictionary of Scientific Biographycompiled by C. C. Gillispie.
The real question for historians of science is whether to continue to rely on the printed word or whether to rely entirely on internet sites like Wikipedia. This reviewer uses both and particularly enjoys the independent views of Asimov, who is sometimes accused of historical inaccuracy. However he is always entertaining.
