Abstract:

The Athenaeum is a private members' club in London, primarily for men and women with intellectual interests, and particularly (but not exclusively) for those who have attained some distinction in science, engineering, literature or the arts. Originally a gentlemen's club, it has admitted women since 2002. This historical account begins with the origin and development of gentlemen's clubs in London during the early 19th century, and continues with the development of the Athenaeum itself. Past members of the Athenaeum Club include Charles Darwin, Michael Faraday, J.S. Mill, Bertrand Russell, J.W.M. Turner, Edward Burne-Jones, Graham Sutherland, Jacob Epstein, Thomas Lawrence, Charles Eastlake, Charles Dickens, T.S. Eliot, W.E. Gladstone, Benjamin Disraeli, and Winston Churchill.
