Title supplied by cataloger; variant title from spine.
Layout: Written in single column, 52 lines; ruled in lead; prick-marks in margins; trimmed edges obscure this feature and some marginalia throughout.
Script: Written in gothic miniscule of the 13th century, with 14th- and 15th-century marginalia throughout.
Decoration: 10 illuminated initials, with three on f. 1r, others at 4r, 8v, 51v, 54v, 55v, 70r, and 75r. First initial is 40-line; others are substantially smaller, ranging from 3- to 17-line; appear to be rubbed at 1r, 4r, and 8v. Small diagram at 121r. Red and blue initials, many elaborately floriated, with rubrics throughout.
Binding: Bound in brown pigskin with gilt-lettered back by Katharine Adams.
Origin: Script suggests 13th-century origin in France, possibly in the Midi.
Provenance: 1. W. J. Leighton, as per his sale, 1912 -- 2. Purchased from Puttick and Simpson by Sir Sydney Carlyle Cockerell, 24 June, 1915 -- 3. Wilfred Merton as per bookplate on inside front cover ("From the library of Wilfred Merton") and handwritten note on third front fly-leaf recto: "Wilfred Merton, Richmond, Surrey, MS. 7" -- 4. Offered for sale by Breslauer, 1958 -- 5. Purchased from Kraus, 29 May 1959.
