Abstract:

Papers of the Austin, Twyman, Spiller and Horsley families of Amherst and Buckingham counties, Va. Includes papers of Archibald Austin (1772-1837), member of Congress and the Virginia House of Delegates. Subjects included War of 1812, politics and business of the Virginia General Assembly. Collection also includes papers of Doctor Iverson Lewis Twyman, his wives and children, as well as the correspondence and accounts of James Madison Spiller. The correspondence of Twyman and Spiller concerns slavery, the study and practice of medicine, and education.

The collection includes several items relating to Peter Francisco, materials relating to the James River and Kanawha Canal, letters concerning the Civil War, accounts and legal documents concerning various counties and genealogical material.
