Telling her that Nathaniel and Julian Hawthorne bought some "knights in armour" for Julian; describing the view from the train windows on the trip from Peterborough to Nottingham and their stop in Grantham; discussing in great detail a trip to Newstead Abbey, Lord Byron's ancestral home; mentioning pictures by Hans Holbein and Sir Peter Lely; reporting that the library at Newstead Abbey had "The Scarlet Letter and other volumes written by Papa"; praising the current owner of Newstead Abbey, Colonel Thomas Wildman, for his maintenance of the property; giving details of the gardens at Newstead Abbey; reflecting on Lord Byron's character.
