Abstract:

Acknowledging receipt of the questionnaire and saying "I'm not sure I've read any novels the last five years, as my list betrays, I'm still discovering Sterne, Nabokov, Turgenev, West, etc., & some of those may not even be Americans;" naming novels whose influence you feel as altered the course of fiction with "Pynchon's "V", Hawkes' "Second Skin", Heller's "Catch 22", Vonnegut's "Mother Night;" naming short stories whose influence has altered the course of fiction "Barth's stories, Gass "Pedersen Kid" etc., Barthelme's stories;" naming writers he believes will dominate the 70s "Barth, Gass, Oates, Hawkes;" naming Charles Aukema as potentially the most important new writer; naming "Vonnegut, Gass, Bourjaily" as three writers he would most like to have as neighbors; and the writers whose execution of character is strongest "Selby, Mailer, Malamud, Yurick."
