Abstract:

Telling her that they were supposed to be inspected yesterday, but "then the officer didn't come to inspect [them]"; noting that he will "be interested to know how Eddie [Newhouse] makes out with his commission"; adding that she does not need to read the letters his father sends to her "unless they interest" her; reporting that he received a letter from "Gus and Bill" [William Maxwell, Cheever's editor at The New Yorker] and they bought two of his stories; informing her that [Harold] Ross "has written to Colonel White about 'Yank,'" but adding that "they can't do anything until [he] finish[es] basic training; encouraging her to come down to South Carolina for a weekend "if it's practical as far as time is involved."
