Abstract:

"Awakenings" presents the segregation of American society before the 1950's, and the effects of the Supreme Court's Brown vs. Board of Education decision in 1954. Also presented are the Emmett Till murder trial in Mississippi, the Montgomery Alabama boycott of public transportation, and the formation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

"Fighting back" presents the history of the integration of public schools and universities in the South after the 1954 Supreme Court decision. The program identifies the national organizations involved in the struggle to integrate schools, describing the leaders and their strategies and how they affected the freedom struggle.
